Biography
A Brief Career Synopsis
Lucas Barry spent most of his early years in the Pacific Northwest and picked up saxophone while living briefly in Montana. After graduating high school in Cheney, a small town outside of Spokane, WA, he attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. Being a liberal-arts college, Whitman College allowed Lucas the chance to continue studying saxophone under Clark Bondy while also majoring in Chemistry. He started to seriously consider pursuing music after an invitation to be the musical guest for Whitman’s annual Convocation ceremony during his junior year. Lucas went on to win Whitman’s Concerto/Aria Competition and earn his B.A. in Music (Performance) with honors.
Lucas taught a private studio in Spokane, WA for a year after graduation and studied with local saxophonist Leo Potts to help prepare for future schooling. After his gap year, Lucas moved across the country to Boston so he could study with Kenneth Radnofsky at New England Conservatory. While at NEC, he performed in masterclasses with Doug O’Connor, Carrie Koffman, and Jan Berry Baker. He also won the NEC Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition, giving him the chance to perform Jacques Ibert’s “Concertino da camera” in NEC’s historic Jordan Hall.
Lucas continues to live in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, regularly commuting throughout Eastern and Central Massachusetts to teach and perform. His many months of grocery and instrument delivery have prepared him for long hours on the open road!
